It is always lovely to be invited for a restaurant review, so when the Harvester asked if we would like to have a meal on them at their Lowry Outlet Mall based restaurant in Manchester, we jumped at the chance! It was impeccable timing after my recent 5k race and meant that we could also treat the rather lovely Jenny to a lovely meal out!
I have to admit that I had had my own preconceptions of what the Harvester would be like, however arriving at the restaurant, situated rather conveniently just inside the Lowry Outlet Mall in Salford, I was impressed with how open, airy and clean it was.
Greeted at the door and shown quickly to the table, we were handed sizeable menus and Liv was given crayons and a colouring in sheet to keep her occupied whilst we made our meal choices.
Drinks wise, we plumped for refillable soft drinks, which you refill yourself using a rather cool pint pump action machine… quite nostalgic if you have previously worked in a bar!
I always love a restaurant that has an open kitchen and it was great to see the chefs hard at work. We had visited the Harvester restaurant on a Monday lunchtime, which we found out was the ideal time to visit. People did stream in after us, however we found that our food was quick to be served.
The menus do cover different ranges and Jenny, as a vegetarian had several yummy choices to choose from. The children’s menu was rather extensive too and I appreciated the fact children’s meals come with a wide range of healthy sides, as opposed to chips being the only side option.
The Harvester menus can be viewed here.
I was on a mission to simply enjoy myself so plumped for the Ultimate Nachos as a starter – my ‘go to’ comfort starter and found myself struggling. Full of flavour and the expected salsa, sour cream, jalapeño peppers and guacamole. Knowing the starter had 865 calories meant that I did not finish the meal, unfortunately too many carbs for me. Jenny plumped for the Breaded Mushrooms, which looked divine… she is lucky I didn’t take one when she wasn’t looking!
Liv’s meal was served whilst we were eating our starter – she had chosen a burger, with a few fries and salad sticks (carrot, cucumber and peppers)… this was hoovered up quite quickly!
Unlimited salad from the salad bar is offered with every children’s meal and every adult main meal, so we quickly dived in and filled up our bowls with the obligatory bacon bits! All the salad was fresh, crisp and plentiful and a great complement to the meal.
A Chicken burger for me and a Butternut Squash and Chickpea burger for Jenny followed the starter, which were full of taste and flavour, but seriously, do not over do the starter if you are plumping for a burger as you will struggle! Jenny commented that the vegetarian burger was lovely and crispy on the outside with a tasty filling. She totally gave it the thumbs up! I felt a little happier, knowing that the grilled chicken, cheese and bacon burger was 615 calories – but alas, it was still too much for me to finish!
Liv during the main meals, had been motoring her way through the Honeycomb Explosion Sundae – Crunchy honeycomb pieces, drizzled with luxurious Devon cream toffee sauce and Belgian chocolate sauce, topped with a crispy wafer – it certainly put a smile on her face, along with some ice cream! It would have been lovely to try some, but we were full and happily rolled out of the restaurant, with very full and content bellies!
The staff were lovely, offering advice on menu choices and being attentive to Liv. The visit really did pleasantly surprise me and I have actually been looking into closer Harvester restaurants to visit with Liv and friends very soon. The food was delicious, plentiful, good value for money and the service was outstanding. If you find yourself on a shopping trip to the Outlet Mall or want a bite to eat before going to the theatre, I would thoroughly recommend The Harvester!
